First Floor: This spacious, airy room (77m2) with its dramatic beamed ceiling combines living and dining area and kitchen area. There is a dining table large enough for 10 people, and plenty of comfortable chairs and sofas facing the TV. The fitted kitchen is well-equipped with a 5 ring stainless steel gas hob, built in electric oven with grill and rotisserie, fridge, dishwasher, electric kettle, toaster, electric coffee maker, iron, ironing board. The fourth bedroom is also on this floor. Wide glazed doors lead you out onto the wooden deck overlooking the garden and the pool and which serves effectively as an outdoor dining area in the summer months. We provide tables and chairs for up to 10 people, plus a barbecue in the garden The small paved garden is in full sunlight most of the day and is dominated by an unusually shaped 10m x 5m swimming pool, surrounded by sun loungers. The pool extension with its shallow step is ideal for non-swimmers. For guests with young children, a gate can be provided to prevent unsupervised access to the pool. Ground floor: Bedroom 1: Double bedroom with king sized double bed (160cm x 200cm), wardrobe, chest of drawers and ensuite shower room with wash hand basin and WC. Glazed doors lead out to the lovely, jungly lower courtyard, which has more garden furniture and is an ideal hideaway during the midday heat. Bedroom 2: Second double bedroom with king sized double bed (160cm x 200cm), wardrobe and chest of drawers, again with double glazed doors leading to the lower courtyard. Bedroom 3: Twin beds (90cm x 190cm), wardrobe, chest of drawers and radius head window overlooking Route de Saint Roch. The main bathroom with bath with shower screen, double sinks and WC is also on the ground floor, easily accessible from the three downstairs bedrooms. Bedroom 4: This bedroom is on the first floor, has twin beds and an unusual wide, low window opening out onto Route de Saint Roch.

Tourbes is a living, growing, working village - in contrast to many of the surrounding villages where holiday homes outnumber local residents. The majority of the population is involved in the main local industry, winemaking, and Tourbes Cave Co-operative has a very good reputation, winning a gold medal in Paris for its 1996 Sauvignon. There is a very well stocked local grocery shop, with adjoining tobacconists and newsagents (selling UK papers only a day late), a boulangerie, butcher and chemist, with other needs supplied by a weekly mini-market on Wednesday where you will find a greengrocer and fishmonger. The supermarkets of Pezenas are only 5 minutes away by car.

Out and About

The Mediterranean beaches are close by, ranging from a 7-mile long stretch of sand at Marseillan Plage to lively, cosmopolitan resorts like Cap d`Agde. The Herault River and thc Canal du Midi offer numerous opportunities for walking, swimming, fishing and boat trips. The magnificent Lac du Salagou 30 minutes away inland provides bathing, wind-surfing, fishing and excellent hilly walks. Tennis courts are available at the nearby village of Tourbes: horse-riding at the Centre de la Tour near Valros; and golf at Saint Thomas between Valros and Beziers. Pezenas, the nearest town, is about 7 kilometres away. It is a very pretty, lively town, hosting a Festival of Arts and Music every summer from June to September. There are exhibitions and concerts, and many free outdoor performances ranging from clowns to flamenco dancers to classical music. There is an interesting local museum and an easily-followed numbered tour of the town can be made. The town is immensely proud of its connection with Molière, the 17th century dramatist. In the other direction is Beziers, a 20 minute drive away, a city with a turbulent past but now one of the jewels of the Midi. Apart from the extraordinary turreted Cathedral there are numerous sites to visit, art galleries, cinemas, a theatre, and of course dozens of restaurants and bars. In August there is the week-long Feria, when the whole of Beziers takes to the streets to celebrate. There is a market and a flower market every Friday, and a monthly antiques market. Longer excursions could take you to the Camargue, the Upper Languedoc National Park, the African Safari Park at Sigean, the Cevennes or the Pyrenees, or even to Spain. There are Roman/Greek excavations at Oppidum d`Enserune, and even older natural wonders at the Cirque de Navacelles and the Chaos de Moureze. The superb medieval village of St. Guilhem-le-Desert is the high point of Languedoc monasticism. The Devil`s Bridge crosses the Herault here - it is the oldest medieval bridge in France). The gorges of the Herault offer many places to swim and canoe, and you can visit the grottoes. Nearby towns and cities worth visiting include Montpellier, Sète, Agde, Sommières and Narbonne, and, at slightly greater distance, Avignon, Perpignan, Carcassonne and Nimes.
