The Bakery is in the centre of old Agde and dates from at least the 16th century. During the 19th century a large wood oven was installed on the ground floor and until the early 1980s the bakery provided fresh bread for this area of the town. The ovens have now been removed to provide a large downstairs dining area but the shop front has been retained giving an atmosphere of old France.
The building itself is spacious giving a total habitable area of 280 square metres. It consists of a large fully equipped kitchen (freezer, microwave, washing machine etc.) and adjoining utility room. The dining room is at the front of the house in the old shop area. A large wood burning stove dominates the room and provides heating during the off season months. There is a downstairs shower room and W.C. The T.V. is equipped for satellite and some English language films and programmes are available. The first floor consists of two double bedrooms and adjoining bathroom. The double bedroom at the back of the first floor consists of a large room with a gracious pine stairway leading to a mezzanine which may be used as a twin bedroom. It is a light and airy space where old stonework and new oak and pine planking intermingle. The front double bedroom is large with a stone fireplace and ample sitting area. On the second floor is a third double bedroom with small en suite bathroom and W.C. This bedroom leads onto the roof garden and BBQ. This open area surrounded by climbing plants (bourganvillea, jasmine, honeysuckle........) is effectively an open air sitting room. The house accomodates 6 comfortably and can accomodate up to 10. It is available for rental throughout the year.
Agde is a lively Mediterranean fishing port on the River Hérault 5 minutes drive from sandy Mediterranean beaches. Founded in the 5th century B.C. as a trading post by the Greeks Agde life remains centred on the sea. The nature reserve of Bagnas stretches out to the east forming a wild area between Agde and the interior lake the Etang de Thau. The lake is particularly well known for the cultivation of oysters and mussels. The lakeside village of Bouzigues makes a wonderful excursion. You can sit in a lakeside restaurant feasting on oysters and tasting the local Picpoul wine for less than 50 francs. Stretching inland to the nature reserve of the Haute Languedoc are hectares and hectares of vines. The local Faugeres wine is of particularly good quality.
