Out and About
Le Petit Viade sits on the main road which runs along the southern side of the Luberon hills allowing easy access to innumerable Provencal towns and villages such as Aix-en-Provence, Apt, Manosque, St. Rémy, Lourmarin, Grambois … It is right in the heart of Provence, a short drive from Aix-en-Provence, an hours drive from the sea at Carry-le-Rouet, 90 mins. drive from the 12kms of sandy beaches of the Camargue with its bulls, white horses and salt fields. Luberon Natural Park Le Petit Viade is situated in the Luberon Natural Park, with all the seductive charm of the hill-top villages, ochre quarries, oak and cedar forests, the bories, medieval castles … The Park protects local architecture and the countryside by actions such as preservation orders and restrictions on building. The extraordinary flora and fauna to be found in the Luberon Natural Park also benefit from the Park's commitment to environmental issues, allowing us to appreciate, in a respectful manner, birds in their natural habitat, oak woods, rivers and springs … We have seen eagles, owls and cranes from our house. Towns and Villages As Le Petit Viade is located right in the centre of Provence, it is surrounded by a multitude of medieval villages, so evocative of holidays and the French way of life : Lourmarin, Grambois, Ansouis, Cucuron, Buoux … some walled, some on hill tops, all breathtakingly authentic.
An hour's drive will take you to many of the attractive towns that spring to mind when you think of Provence - for example Avignon, Apt, Arles, Marseilles, Forqualier. Closer to hand, at 30 mins drive are Aix-en-Provence with its world-renowned festival and Manosque where A Hussar on the Roof was filmed. Markets Spoilt for choice, you\'ll never be able to visit all the markets that burgeon in the Luberon in the summer. From small farmer's markets where maybe just 5 or 6 local farmers come to sell their freshly-picked produce directly to the public (when was the last time you bought courgettes that had been picked that morning or eggs that were still warm?) to the whole town of Forcalquier being given over to Market Day. Fresh fruit and vegetables, local produce (hams, pâtés, goats cheese …) clothes, shoes, all bringing people together ; market days are a feast for the eyes and for the heart.
