There are also a good selection of shops such as butchers, fishmongers, delicatessens, and greengrocers. Marseillan is an ancient Greek town, founded in the 6th Century BC. It has kept the authentic character of a fishing village on the shores of the Mediterranean and the Bassin de Thau, which is famous for its cultivation of oysters and mussels. The house is walking distance to over 10 excellent restaurants ranging from the basic but tasty Pizzeria, to the plush gourmet experience Michelin starred experience at Chez Phillipe(which may take you a few days to recover from). The local beach, Marseillan Plage, is 10 miles of uninterrupted golden sand and with a water depth that shelves gently. You can be on it in less than 10 minutes by cycle ride or 5 minutes by car.

Out and About
The surrounding countryside ¤ Vineyards Galore - more wine is produced here than anywhere, with a great number awarded AOC¦ status. Drive in and taste without obligation sometimes you will find a treasure & a bargain, sometimes one or the other sometimes nothing but a great experience and an opportunity to meet the locals.
¤ The Canal du Midi - great for walking in the shade of the riverside trees, cycling, fishing & canoeing. You can hire boats for day trips, stopping at many tucked away restaurants along the way.
¤ Carcasonne - An hour away & well worth the visit for the family. This is a beautiful fortified city where you can choose to soak up the history by taking in one of the many guided walks, or soak up the local wine sitting al fresco enjoying the ambiance
¤ Noilly Prat Distillery - Produced in Marseillan, the distillery is an interesting & mouth watering place to visit. Noilly Prat, first produced in 1843, is a popular French aperitif. Look around & see how it is made, taste the fruits & buy from the shop. Try it as a long cool refreshing summer drink with tonic or lemonade.
¤ The Etang de Thau - The etang has a tradition for oyster & mussel farming, providing the area with a rich source for food & wealth. It is possible to take a short tour of the oyster & mussel beds. The local produce of this area goes hand in hand with the regional wine produced. Try some in one of the many good restaurants in Marseillan or buy some to prepare back at the house.
