Why do the storks, winging their way south from the cold wastelands of Northern Europe, rest for a month or so in Southern
France before heading off to their winter homes in Africa?
Why did the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Saracens all linger in Southern
France? Why did Hannibal promenade his elephants over the herb scented plains of
Southern France? Was it the sun soaked Mediterranean beaches, the wine terraced hills, the olive groves, the sparkling rivers, mountains and lakes? Was it the startling natural light witnessed by
artists like Van Gogh, Gaugin, Cézanne and Picasso? Why did the Princes
of Conti settle on Pezenas? Why? Well, its no Cathar mystery. As you sit beside the pool of your holiday villa, or, between wine tastings in the Herault wine triangle or stumbling in the footsteps of Hannibal's elephants, or swimming in a sparkling rock pool in the Gorges of the Herault or, in a sea view restaurant, washing down oysters with golden Picpoul de Pinet ......... you'll know why. Our region of Southern France is the most beautiful and blessed of all the Mediterranean coast line. We have the beaches, the wine, the hills, the rich mixed culture stretching from 'blood in the sand' bullfights and traditional bull running through to the resurgence of the Occitan language and its traditional minstrel associations. We have the the flamingos, wild bulls and white horses of the Camargue. We have the
fortress city of Carcassonne, and Avignon, Arles, the Pont-du-Gard, Nimes, Cannes, Nice, Aix-en-Provence,
Colioures, Pezenas, Beziers, St Tropez, Montpellier and the naked wonders of Cap d'Agde. We have plains, lakes, rivers and mountains. We have the Mediterranean diet studded with garlic, peppers and tomatoes, scented with rosemary, thyme and basil, flavoured with olive oil and good wines.
Ask a Languedocien if he'd take a holiday outside his region's boundaries, he'll reply "Why?" and once you have been here you will understand "why?". | Advertise
